SCAR NEEDLING AFTERCARE

SCAR NEEDLING AFTERCARE

You will be provided with the following information in print the day of your procedure, but it’s always best to get familiar with how to take care of your treatment area after your procedure!

  • If applicable, keep area covered with protective dressing for 3 days (if applicable, the dressing will be provided).
  • If the treatment area is not covered, or you remove the dressing before the 3 days: Apply a thin layer of Aquafor or Bag Balm 2-3 times daily with a gloved hand or a clean Q-tip for the first 3 days.
  • Be sure to double wash your hands before touching the treated area.
  • Gentle soap and tepid water can be used if needed after 4 hours. Use only your hands to pat dry.
  • If you are prone to hyperpigmentation (skin darkening), I recommend using a skin lightening agent such as Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid of liquorice products (such as SkinCeuticals Phyto) for 1 week after your procedure. Apply these products underneath the Aquafor.
  • After 5-7 days, you may resume you normal skin care routine, as tolerated. Remember, your skin will be more sensitive to irritation during the first 7-10 days.

Things to avoid:

  • Avoid sun tanning and prolonged exposure to sunlight for at least 1 week. After first week, wear sun block daily.
  • Avoid makeup for 2-3 days if possible. If needed, use mineral makeup after 24 hours, applied with clean tools.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise that cause sweating, as well as saunas, steam rooms, etc. for 48-72 hours.
  • Avoid submerging in water of all kinds for at lease 72 hours (of until dressing is removed, if applicable).

The Healing Process: What to Expect

Scar needling is a quick and non-invasive cosmetic procedure with minimal side effects. However, it’s quite normal to experience the following:

Day 1-3

A sunburn-like effect is normal. Your skin may feel tight, dry or sensitive to the touch. If uncovered, treat the skin gently by washing it with a gentle cleanser, cool water, and using only your hands to pat dry no earlier than 4 hours after treatment.

Redness may also be present (and actually desired!) and in some cases, patients may experience bruising that can last for 5-7 days and temporary swelling for 2-4 days.

Day 2-7

Peeling may start 2-5 days after treatment. You’ll notice skin dryness and flaking which is due to an increased turnover in skin cells. DO NOT pick, scratch or scrub at the treated skin! You must allow the old skin to flake off naturally and keep it moisturized at all times.

Day 5-7

You may start to ease back into your regular skin care routine, once your skin no longer feels overly irritated. Most patients have noticed continued skin improvements over the months following their last treatment.

Scar needling can be repeated every 4-8 weeks, often recommended in a series, depending on the severity of treated scars or condition.
